Who is Good King Archery?

My name is Joshua Rodenburg, and I am the owner of Good King Archery.  I, my wife, and our two kids live in southwest Iowa, and we are a homeschool family.  My son’s name is Josiah, and he is the inspiration for Good King Archery, as he is named after a very good king from the Bible.  The references for this are from 2 Kings 22:2 and 2 Kings 23:25…he was the best and most honorable king in Israel or Judah in their history.  What an incredible legacy and claim!

I have always enjoyed archery ever since I was young and my dad bought me my first bow and I would shoot it at the colorful round target on the hay bales on my homestead family farm.  Upon becoming an adult, I never picked that bow up again as I began to focus on college and other things.  However, a short time ago my wife started her own business, and my daughter wanted to help her with that, and my son Josiah asked me, “What can I make…can you make me a bow and arrow?” I was determined to not disappoint him, and this began the process of creating Good King Archery.  Josiah is very happy to have his own bow now, and to show all his friends how his dad builds the bows in the garage and tests them on our backyard target…a target I think my dad would be very proud to see if he were still living to see what his son and grandson were doing.  Now, onto what we actually make for you to enjoy!

Archery Products Overview

RECURVE BOWS

The recurve bow design has existed for 1000s of years, with examples of these bows being the bows used by the Scythians, Mongols, and Turks in ancient and medival battles dating back nearly 3000 years, and the Sioux, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Blackfoot native American tribes in the United States.  It is a bow with straight limbs, but curved tips positioned at the top and bottom of the bow that curve away from the archer.  This is what gives the recurve bow its name.  A variation of the recurve bow is the horse bow, which is in essence a recurve bow with reflex (limb curves) that make the bow shorter and more manageable for shooting from horseback.  The recurve bow has a handle in the middle of the limbs, and the limbs are often tapered so that the handle remains a nearly circular shape, and the limbs gradually flatten more and more culminating in completely flat tips which curve away from the archer.  The recurve bow is actually the bow style used at the Olympic games dating back to 1972 as it has the power and precision sought after by the most elite archery experts.

The recurve bow has the ability to provide more power and distance for an archer because the limbs store and deliver energy more efficiently as pressure is spread onto the limbs and not localized on the handle portion of the bow as is true of a longbow. When the archer draws back on the string to their set draw length and releases their fingers, the energy stored in the bent tapered limbs transfers through the string and into the arrow.  This projects the arrow towards the target, sometimes at speeds exceeding 100 mph depending on the draw weight.

Good King Archery recurve bows are made of schedule 40 pvc pipe and are strung with 550 paracord.  This creates a strong and durable bow that will easily last for years given proper useage.  Our recurve bows vary in sizes from 48″ to 72″ in length and 1/2″ to 1″ in width.  Our recurve bows also come in one of the widest selection of colors and designs available on the internet, so there is definitely a color or design that will appeal to you.  At the bottom of this page I have made a chart showing the draw weights and draw lengths to help you find the best recurve bow for you given height and current strength.

LONG BOWS

The longbow design of straight limbs with no recurve at the limb tips dates back as far as 4000 B.C. and was used by ancient cultures including the Egyptians and the ancient Celts and English far before it became renown during the Hundred Years War of 1340-1450 in which the Englishmen used longbows to hurl 6 arrows per minute per bow to incapicitate the much larger and strong French knights and infantry.  The longbows of those groups were often 5-6 feet in length and made of very thick yew or elm, and could project an arrow over 2000 feet with a draw weight approaching 200 lbs.  It was an extremely powerful weapon used by highly trained and muscular fighters (the skeletons of those men show massively enlarged forearm bones), and is the earliest known bow created and its use helped shape the landscape of the ancient world, especially medieval Europe.  Okay, enough with the history lessons. 🙂

Good King Archery longbows are made of schedule 40 pvc pipe and are strung with 550 paracord.  This creates a strong and durable bow that will easily last for years given proper useage.  Our longbows vary in sizes from 48″ to 72″ in length and 1/2″ to 1″ in width.  Our  longbows also come in one of the widest selection of colors and designs available on the internet, so there is defintiely a color or design that will appeal to you.  Upon special request, we can make you a longbow similar in length (6 feet) and width (2″+) as was used by the ancient longbowsmen, but it will simply not be as strong as the antiquity bows, but it would definitely make a fantastic LARP, Cosplay, or other reinactment prop for you to show off.

At the bottom of this page I have made a chart showing the draw weights and draw lengths to help you find the best longbow for you given height and current strength.  For more information on any specific longbows, please visit the Archery Products page in the top menu, and to purchase a  longbow, please visit our store.  Please contact us with any questions you have, and we will be glad to answer them for you in a timely manner.  We appreciate your interest in longbows from Good King Archery, and look forward to hearing from you soon with your order or questions.

ARCHERY ARROWS AND QUIVERS

Arrows date back as far as the farthest longbow discovered, so arrows have been in existence for at least 6000 years.  The first arrows had obsidian or flint arrowhead rocks tied to the front point and feathers with their ends wrapped with string as the tail fletchings, and those were clearly very effective on giant sloths and short-faced bears, because they went extinct.  Joking aside, arrows have been an extremely effective hunting tool since the dawn of man, and it remains true today.

The arrows from Good King Archery are affordable arrows one can use for recreational archery, for archery props, and for hunting.  When choosing your arrows, you must know your draw length in order to choose the correct arrow length for you.  At the bottom of this page I have made a chart showing the draw weights and draw lengths to help you make the right arrow purchase.  The human body is made is such a way that there are specific ratios that govern our stature, one of them being arm span.  You can measure your draw length by either taking your height divided by 2.5, or you can stretch out your hand and make a fist (turn your head to look at your fist) and then measure from the end of your fist to your face.  Both figures should be similar, with the latter figure often being the most accurate.  Pertaining to the type of arrows and quivers we offer, our arrows are customizable in length, color, arrow tips, and some special features.  The quivers are customizable in length, color, and special features as well.

STONE SLINGS

We all probably know the story of David and Goliath…the young lad David willingly goes into a one-on-one battle with the nine foot plus tall giant Goliath.  David on his own volition was armed with just a sling and five smooth stones, but Goliath was a mighty warrior with a trio of gigantic spear, sword, and shield.  Goliath was ready for an up close battle, but David wasn’t planning on that.  David knew he had one shot, and his aim was true.  With the hurl of one smooth stone into Goliath’s massive forehead, the giant was defeated, and David was the hero.  It is a fair estimate the stone was traveling close to 60 mph+, and because David was a shepherd and had incredibly good range and aim, he could have launched it from more than 300 feet away.  It was an amazing small and versatile weapon.

That is what a stone sling can do.  It is also known as a shephard’s sling because it was an effective weapon to kill or deter predators of flocks of sheep kept by lowly shepherds.  Stone slings have been used worldwide for at least 6000 years.  Archeologists have found them in Peru, Egypt, Greece, Australia, and America.  They were an extremely versatile and intimidating weapon in battle, and there is much written by ancient war historians on their use and the fear it created on the recipients of the hurled stones.

The stone slings from Good King Archery are made from 550 paracord and are available in various lengths, colors, and styles.  We include practice plastic projectiles with our stone slings to allow you to practice in your backyard, but please still use caution as you practice.  For more information on our stone sling products, please visit the Archery Products…Stone Slings page in the top menu, and to purchase a  stone sling, please visit our shop in the top menu.  Please contact us with any questions you have, and we will be glad to answer them for you in a timely manner.  We appreciate your interest in stone slings from Good King Archery, and look forward to hearing from you soon with your order or questions.
